Donate Life America Initiative with Facebook Results in Historic Surge in Online Donor Designations

facebook-donor-activity-cnkDonate Life America, the national organization dedicated to increasing the number of registered organ, eye and tissue donors that save and heal lives, reported a historic surge in online donor designations nationwide following Tuesday’s announcement of a major initiative with Facebook.

Facebook’s upgrade to its Timeline profile structure, which allows Facebook users to declare and share their organ donor status, features a link to Donate Life America’s National Registration Page, which in turn enables individuals to legally designate their donation decision on a state donor registry. As a result, state donor registries across the country reported a dramatic increase in online donor designations.

“The surge in online donor designations greatly exceeded our expectations,” said David Fleming, President and CEO of Donate Life America. “Facebook’s commitment to helping save lives has resulted in an immediate response that dwarfs any past organ donation initiative.”

The 22 states that tracked Tuesday’s online activity saw a fifteen-fold increase in the number of designated donors by the end of the workday, from an average of approximately 360 per day to more than 6,000. (See data table.) Even more encouraging was the explosion in overnight activity. For example, California enrolled 1,239 donors online as of 6:30 p.m. on May 1, then added another 2,665 designated donors by 8:00 a.m. on May 2.

“The viral nature of communication via Facebook holds great promise for sustained increases that will carry over to state motor vehicle agencies, which have enrolled more than 98 percent of the nation’s 104 million designated donors,” said Fleming. “We encourage every Facebook user declares their intent to donate on their profile to legally authorize their decision by signing up on their state donor registry. Taking that step will provide hope to the over 114,000 men, women and children currently waiting for a life-saving organ transplant.”
