Facebook Initiative Continues to Drive Record Enrollment in Online State Donor Registries; Two-Day Surge Surpasses 24,000

Donate Life America, the national organization dedicated to increasing the number of registered organ, eye and tissue donors who save and heal lives, reported that the historic surge in online donor designations nationwide propelled by an initiative with Facebook continued into a second day with little reduction in enrollment activity.
Forty-four donor registries reported a total of 24,354 online donor designations in the first two days of the Facebook initiative, a 23-fold increase over average enrollment activity. (See data table.) Furthermore, the 11,942 online enrollments on May 2 was only four percent less than the first day, which is atypical of the single-day spikes in activity that normally follow major media coverage.
“What distinguishes the Facebook initiative from previous media-driven efforts is both the number of donor designations and how it is being sustained,” said David Fleming, President and CEO of Donate Life America. “While a virally-supported surge in online donor designations will add hundreds of thousands to the nation’s donor rolls, we are eager to measure the impact at motor vehicle agencies, which historically account for 98 percent of registry enrollments. If the Facebook wave reaches the DMV shores, the impact of the initiative will grow exponentially.”
“We encourage every Facebook user who declares their intent to donate on their profile to legally authorize their decision by signing up on their state donor registry,” said Fleming. “Taking that step will provide hope to the over 114,000 men, women and children currently waiting for a life-saving organ transplant.”
Facebook’s upgrade to its Timeline profile structure, which allows Facebook users to declare and share their organ donor status, features a link to Donate Life America’s National Registration Page, which in turn enables individuals to legally designate their donation decision on a state donor registry. As a result, state donor registries across the country reported an ongoing dramatic increase in online donor designations since Tuesday’s announcement.
