How Donated Tissue Supports Breast Reconstruction After Cancer

Published in Blog

Donated tissue can play an important role in breast reconstruction after cancer, helping to support healing following a mastectomy. Breast Reconstruction Awareness Day recognizes the options available to people facing breast cancer surgery and the donor heroes whose gifts can help make recovery possible. For Sarah, tissue donation became part of her reconstruction journey and, over time, a powerful reminder of a stranger’s generosity.

Choosing breast reconstruction after a mastectomy

Sarah, a nurse at Washington University, had been monitored for years because of dense breast tissue. In October 2022, doctors found something concerning. As she considered her treatment options, she chose to have both breasts removed through a bilateral mastectomy, followed by reconstructive surgery. Her care team explained that donated tissue would be used during the procedure to support the reconstruction. Although Sarah’s nursing background helped her understand why, she did not fully absorb the details in the midst of a life-changing diagnosis.

Sarah’s breast reconstruction and recovery went exceedingly well, without complications. She remains grateful that the gift of tissue donation was available as part of her care, providing support for her reconstruction and a path forward after breast cancer treatment.

How tissue donation helps patients heal

Organ transplantation is often the most visible expression of donation, but eye and tissue donation also helps people heal in many ways. Through her work in fetal care nursing, Sarah had seen families whose children needed lifesaving heart or kidney transplants. After her own surgery, a dear friend received a cornea transplant that greatly improved her quality of life. Those experiences broadened Sarah’s understanding of how one donor’s generosity can reach patients and families across many different medical needs.

“There’s so much that can be done with tissue donation outside of organ donation,” she said. “These gifts may not always make headlines, but they can benefit many patients and families across a wide range of medical needs.”

Mid-America Transplant honors organ, eye and tissue donors

At Mid-America Transplant, we work with donor families and medical partners to make organ, eye, and tissue donation possible and to honor each donor’s legacy. Stories like Sarah’s show how donated tissue can support not only lifesaving transplants, but also breast reconstruction and other procedures that restore health, mobility, and quality of life.

The lasting impact of becoming an organ, eye, and tissue donor

When Sarah thinks about the donor and family whose decision made her donated tissue available, gratitude is the first thing she feels. She knows donation decisions happen during an extraordinarily difficult time, making the generosity of donor families even more meaningful.

“It is truly a gift. It is a loving gift that can impact so many lives,” Sarah said. “I would love to thank somebody, but I’m not sure who I would thank.”

Sarah’s breast reconstruction story is one example of what a donor’s generosity can make possible. One organ, eye, and tissue donor can save and heal more than 75 lives, creating an impact that continues far beyond a single procedure.
