The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS)  and The Joint Commission  are bodies designed to ensure compliance of regulatory standards in hospitals. These programs aim to ensure consistency and build better processes for patient safety, ethical decision making and quality care. By complying with these regulations and standards, we can work together to save more lives.

To be prepared for a visit from CMS or The Joint Commission, the following documents should be readily accessible electronically or in a file folder:

  1. Hospital contract with Mid-America Transplant. This contract includes the CMS requirements regarding organ and tissue donation, such as the requirement to call Mid-America Transplant after each death at your facility, our HIPPA exempt status, the requirement to log all deaths, what to expect when we arrive, and the financial responsibilities of all parties.
  2. Policies and procedures on Organ and Tissue Donation, Donation after Cardiac Death, Declaration of Brain Death
  3. Annual 12-month plan for organ and tissue donation
  4. List of hospital deaths
  5. Documentation of training given to staff about the donation process
