Jonathan was a beautiful boy with an infectious smile. He made friends with everyone. He loved school, baseball, his family and friends, hamburgers and french fries. He’d survived brain cancer and many surgeries as a result of the cancer. At thirteen, something went wrong with a routine surgery and Jonathan unexpectedly died. I was asked if I would consider donating his corneas. Amidst my grief, I didn’t hesitate. I knew what it is like to have a sick child and wanted to do whatever I could to help someone else. I also knew that this was in line with Jonathan’s generous spirit. It’s now been fourteen years since Jonathan passed away. I’ve been volunteering for Mid-America Transplant as a way to honor Jonathan.
