Nicholas Elizondo

Nick was born in 1989 with a condition called Heterotaxy Syndrome that, among other things, led to multiple heart defects and biliary atresia. Nick had 7 open-heart surgeries throughout his life to replace shrinking heart valves and a life-saving liver transplant in 2014. He was on the liver transplant list for 1 year, 7 months, and 5 days of fear, anxiety, uncertainty, and hope until one day he received the call that there was a liver available. He was rushed to the hospital and after a sixteen hour surgery, he was saved. His life was forever changed. He was able to live a happy, healthy life with his wife and family and continue to advocate for organ and tissue donation. Unrelated to his transplant, he developed angiosarcoma in late 2018 and passed away in January of 2019. In keeping with his wishes, he was evaluated for donation and his corneas were able to be donated. A devoted and loving husband, a wonderful brother and son, and a dear friend to all who knew him, Nick was a hero his entire life, battling an illness few had heard of and raising awareness for causes near and dear to him, and he continued that legacy of heroism in his passing, giving the gift of sight to someone in need.
