Noel was diagnosed with Nephrotic Syndrome about a week after his 3rd birthday; he is about to turn 7.
We were originally told all of the worst-case scenarios, but were assured that 95% of cases were managed with medication. Noel, however, is not your typical case. Any worst-case scenarios we were told about, he’s had it happen and more. Noel had lived half of his life in a hospital bed. He missed preschool and family trips, and missed many memories made with his older sister. In December of 2023, he got extremely sick and his body started to shut down. We weren’t sure he was going to pull through. They started dialysis, and in January 2024 he had both kidneys removed. In October 2024, he was placed on the transplant list. Every time the phone would ring, we would jump to answer it, only to be disappointed.
On the night of July 14, 2025, we were all sitting around the table playing cards with family who were in from out of town, when my phone rang at 8:30 pm. Confused as to who was calling so late, I answered. The woman told me who she was, and I instantly started to cry. Everything from the next 12 hours is a blur. Our little guy finally had his life back!! It was such a euphoric feeling, but also a great deal of sadness for the family who lost their child to save ours! We will forever be grateful to them for giving our son a second chance at life.
