Gerald “Jerry” Hauck
What didn’t surprise us at all was his wish to be an organ donor.
Gerald “Jerry” and I were married ten years ago. We were 72 years old, both survivors of spouses with Alzheimer’s. We met in a support group and fell in love. We intended to have the most fun we could in the time we had left. And we did.
When my husband Jerry passed away suddenly this past November, we were all in shock. But what didn’t surprise us at all was his wish to be an organ donor.
Jerry was a much-revered teacher and coach at the high school in his hometown of Ashland, Oregon. His whole life centered around his students, sports, and giving back to his community. His passion never waned. After retirement, he continued to volunteer and was well- known for his involvement and leadership in so many things. I can’t recall a single time he said no. Jerry also loved to cook and share his recipes, creating Coach’s Cookbook.
Jerry was memorialized with a huge “Pep Rally” at the Ashland High School Gym where his basketball teams’ victories were legendary.
Our family is so proud of this final gift Jerry was able to give.
