I wanted to give someone the opportunity to love, laugh, dance, and enjoy life.
One year ago, I donated my kidney. It was an altruistic donation, although I am not a fan of that word. To me, it’s too self-serving, which is why only my family, a handful of friends, and my coworkers knew about the donation. Since then, little by little, I have begun to share my story.
When anyone asks me why I would do this, my answer is always the same: it’s because of the amazing people at Mid-America Transplant United. My boyfriend, Eric, is a kidney recipient; he received his mother’s kidney 22 years ago. Through him, I have had the privilege to be involved with some amazing people. Over the past 6 years, I have watched this family of people enjoy each other, enjoy life, and show amazing gratitude and grace. I have never known people to have such passion for life as they all do. They cherish every breath and live with such honor and appreciation for the gift of life. The donor families have shown strength and courage beyond what I can imagine. They have such a genuine, loving, and caring spirit, and are so open to giving support and guidance. I am in awe of these families.
Because of organ donation, Eric is with us today. Because someone (his Mom) donated to him, I got to meet the love of my life. I wanted to give someone the opportunity to love, laugh, dance, and enjoy life. I owe the universe and God for what I have been blessed with, and I pray I can be more like my Mid-America family.
